An incredible little piece of Roman history dating back more than 1,700 years. This ancient coin was struck during the reign of Emperor Diocletian, one of the most important rulers of the later Roman Empire.

The obverse features a radiate bust of Diocletian facing right, with portions of his original Latin imperial inscription still visible, including DIOCLETIANVS, the Latin form of his name. His titles on coins from this period can also include abbreviations such as IMP (Imperator, “Emperor/Commander”) and AVG (Augustus, the imperial title).

The reverse depicts Jupiter standing left, holding a thunderbolt and long scepter. Diocletian issued several closely related Jupiter reverse types invoking Jupiter as the divine protector and preserver of the emperor. The surviving reverse inscription and mint marks on this particular coin are not clear enough to confidently assign the exact reverse variety or mint.

Diocletian ruled from AD 284–305 and is especially known for establishing the Tetrarchy, a system that divided imperial authority among multiple rulers in an effort to more effectively govern the enormous Roman Empire.

Despite measuring only 19 mm across, this coin retains a recognizable imperial portrait, radiate crown, portions of its Latin lettering and the standing figure of Jupiter. Its patina, earthen deposits and worn surfaces have been preserved as part of its long history.
