Camarasaurus Femur Fragment with Bite Marks- Morrison Formation | River Walkers Minerals
Locale: Morrison Formation, Western United States 🇺🇸Â
Age: Late Jurassic (~145–155 million years old)
Dimensions: 67g | 2.5 x 1.4 x 0.9 inches
This intriguing specimen represents a fragment of femur attributed to Camarasaurus, one of the most abundant and recognizable sauropods of the Late Jurassic. Several depressions and gouges are present on the bone and have been interpreted as bite marks, offering a fascinating glimpse into the ancient ecosystem and the scavengers or predators that interacted with the carcass.
Camarasaurus was a massive long-necked herbivore that could reach lengths of 50–60 feet and weigh more than 20 tons. Unlike the more slender diplodocids, Camarasaurus possessed a robust build and broad, spoon-shaped teeth adapted for stripping vegetation. Its fossils are among the most common dinosaur remains recovered from the famous Morrison Formation, one of the richest dinosaur-bearing deposits in the world.
The Morrison Formation has produced some of the most iconic dinosaurs ever discovered, including Allosaurus, Stegosaurus, Diplodocus, Apatosaurus, and Brachiosaurus. During the Late Jurassic, these animals roamed vast floodplains and forests that covered much of the western United States.
Bone fragments preserving possible feeding traces provide a rare and tangible connection to the interactions that occurred millions of years ago. Rather than representing a single moment in time, specimens like this tell a story of life, death, and the complex ecosystem that existed long before the rise of Tyrannosaurus rex.
