Dragon Scale Calcite with Chalcopyrite- Sweetwater Mine | River Walkers Minerals

Weight: 23 g
Dimensions: 1.6 × 1.5 × 1.2 in
Locale: Sweetwater Mine, Reynolds County, Missouri, USA 🇺🇸

A beautiful and unusual Sweetwater Mine calcite featuring the distinctive sharp, angular growth commonly referred to as “dragon scale” calcite. Multiple intergrown calcite crystals create an artistic formation, with pale champagne coloring and translucent areas that allow you to see into the crystals.

What really makes this piece special are the chalcopyrite phantoms visible within the calcite. These internal growth features preserve earlier stages of crystal development, with metallic chalcopyrite incorporated during subsequent calcite growth. Additional colorful chalcopyrite is visible along the exterior, adding little metallic flashes against the soft calcite.

The Sweetwater Mine in Reynolds County, Missouri is part of the Viburnum Trend, a world-famous Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) lead-zinc mining district known for producing exceptional calcite specimens alongside sulfide minerals including galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite.

Base not included!
