An absolutely massive crinoid fossil plate from Morocco, weighing nearly 10 pounds and measuring over 14 inches across. The surface is densely packed with beautifully preserved crinoid remains, including long, articulated stems that wind and overlap across the matrix, scattered individual stem sections, and large areas of incredibly detailed feathery arms. The dark gray-black fossils contrast dramatically against the natural reddish matrix, making the sheer density of preservation easy to appreciate even from a distance. Up close, the detail is incredible- individual columnals can be seen along the stems, while the finer branching structures create almost fingerprint-like patterns across much of the plate. Several substantial stems remain remarkably long and preserved, including one that runs vertically through the center of the specimen. Crinoids are marine echinoderms related to modern sea stars and sea urchins, and specimens like this represent accumulations of their remains preserved in ancient seafloor sediments from approximately 450 million years ago. At 9.5 pounds, this is an impressive statement-sized fossil with an incredible amount to explore across its surface. This piece has been professionally repaired.
