Potamon Crab Fossil (A)- Denizli Basin | River Walkers Mineral

Potamon Crab Fossil (A)- Denizli Basin | River Walkers Mineral

A beautifully perched Potamon crab preserved in warm, honey-toned travertine from the Denizli Basin of southwestern Turkey. The crab is fully exposed in lifelike posture, with both claws tucked forward and the domed carapace rising in high relief above the travertine plate. This is exactly how the crab was sitting before becoming naturally preserved. Nothing has been altered or repaired.

Potamon is a genus of freshwater crab still living today around the eastern Mediterranean. These fossils come from Pleistocene era (approx 400,000 years old), formed in ancient spring and river-fed environments. This specimen captures a shockingly intact moment from that world, and yet today is still full of character!

The matrix itself is classic Denizli travertine: layered, cream-colored stone with a finely botryoidal texture that almost mimics rippled sand. Natural crevasses along the edges add more dimension and make this feel like a frozen moment on an ancient riverbed. Under strong light, tiny sparkling crystal faces are visible across the surface.
