Potamon Crab Fossil (H)- Denizli Basin | River Walkers Minerals
A beautiful, full-bodied Potamon crab preserved in creamy Denizli travertine, displaying exceptional three-dimensional relief and a remarkably intact posture. This individual sits naturally within a pocket of the matrix, with its legs and claws preserved in lifelike arrangement and the carapace showing excellent form. No repairs, no carving, this is exactly how the crab naturally fossilized.
Formed in the Pleistocene era (approx 400,000 years old), these freshwater crabs were entombed in rapidly depositing spring-fed travertine in what is now southwestern Turkey. The matrix around this specimen is especially aesthetic: warm honey-toned calcite with tightly botryoidal growths, natural voids, and layered travertine “walls” framing the crab like a miniature cave system.
Under UV light, this piece glows brilliantly! The inner surfaces and crab display vivid UV reactivity and a gentle phosphorescent afterglow once the light is removed, adding an entirely new dimension to how it can be displayed.
